Lifestyle

In marketing, “lifestyles” provide a means by which advertisers and marketers endeavor to target and match consumer aspirations with products, or to create aspirations relevant to new products. Therefore marketers take the patterns of belief and action characteristic of lifestyles and direct them toward expenditure and consumption….

In sociology, a lifestyle is the way a person lives. A lifestyle is a characteristic bundle of behaviors that makes sense to both others and oneself in a given time and place, including social relations, consumption, entertainment, and dress. The behaviors and practices within lifestyles are a mixture of habits, conventional ways of doing things, and reasoned actions.

Ever more they are dominantly present in the street scene: tourists staring at the LCD-screen of their camera. Digitizing their experiences of far away “popular destinations”. “Being there” gets a new meaning.

Making photos is about conserving memories. In the old analogue days, taking pictures resulted in a photo album, a physical entity that you could show to family and friends. Digital photography has extended the tourists possibilities to collect, conserve and share their memories enormously.

But I keep wondering. What is the impact of transcending from the analogue world (atoms) to digital (pixels). How does the real world relate to cyber world in which we are sharing our memories with anyone who has a PC (As Gnib and many others do…)? Does digitizing our experiences influence our perception? Are memories getting a new meaning?

No, I don’t have answers to these questions. You might have some thoughts. If so, you’re invited to react.

Thnx,

Gnib

Semana Santa or the Holy Week.

What is the Holy week? Put simply, so that we can all understand, the Holy Week in Malaga is the staging of the Passion of Christ in its various stages, as shown in the realistic sculptures that are carried on the ceremonial platforms, accompanied by the ‘nazarenes’. These members of the brotherhoods are not just ‘penitents’; their roots are found way back in the doctrines of the Council of Trent. They first took the form of the ‘via crucis’ (the ‘way of the cross’, or the ‘stations of the cross’); later came the special devotion to certain images that resulted in the creation of religious associations. During the Baroque period the brotherhoods were generated by the trade guilds and organizations, even today still conserving the old guild names that reflect their heritage; los viñeros (wine makers); los caldereros (coppersmiths), toneleros (coopers)…

These brotherhoods then became a crucial bonding element within their neighbourhood or parish: La Trinidad, El Perchel, La Victoria, Capuchinos, Cruz del Molinillo, Lagunillas, Catedral, Los Mártires, San Juan Bautista, San Felipe Neri, San Pablo Apóstol, Santo Domingo and San Julián are among the oldest brotherhoods; Dulce Nombre, Cruxifición, Salesianos, Santa Cruz, Nueva Esperanza are more recent.

No matter, they all share the same concept of neighbourhood and brotherhood. In any case, at present - and this is independent of the historic background of any brotherhood - the main obligation of these religious associations is to bring their members, during the time of penitence, out from their headquarters, chapel or shed (there still exist fraternities installed in alleys and corners of the city under a provisional scaffold), to pass by the Cathedral and from there journey back to their church.

The procession route is strictly planned prior to the event, and is subject to a rigourous time schedule which cannot, under any circumstances, be altered. If any reason, meteorological or otherwise, inhibits full and timely participation in the procession, the affected float is cancelled and the brotherhood have to wait a whole year to try again.

It really was a unique experience to attend this years Holy Week. Considering the ceremonial platforms must really weigh 2000 to 3000 kilogrammes, I guess the carriers must have suffered a lot more than myself with my lightweight soundrecorder and camera. Well, you can see it for yourself.

And…….if you are wondering; the subtitles in the clip are in Dutch. I might come with an English version someday.
